The Kimkins Diet
Kimkins is a very controversial diet which is gaining a lot of momentum on the Internet. It claims significant results in extremely short periods of time. While extremely appealing, anyone considering trying this diet should tread carefully. Before you jump in read this brief overview.
Kimkins diet was created by an anonymous dieter who goes by the screen name of Kimmer. The core of the diet is pretty much complete avoidance of calories, fat, carbs and fiber. The diet is rooted in Atkins diet circa 1972 which explains the name. The diet was featured in the People magazine as well as Women’s World.
So far nobody knows who Kimmer is. This person claims to have lost almost 200 pounds in less than a year and has managed to keep the weight off while on the diet. Alas, this remains to be just a claim, nothing more. This person refuses to be interviewed also citing that he or she is neither a healthcare professional nor a dietician.
The core of the diet lies in extremely low calory intake, sometimes as low as 500 calories per day. It contains mostly proteins and limits carbohydrates intake to 20 grams per day. However, the sample menus provided by Kimmer result in significantly lower protein and carbohydrate intake, some as low as 5 grams of combined proteins and carbs and 7 grams fiber. No other foods are mentioned on the diet.
While it might seem like a very effective diet, it could turn potentially dangerous if not fatal. This is pretty much a starvation diet with all its possible consequences. The diet completely ignores body’s need for fatty acids and polynutrients and many other essential components of daily diet.
Additionally the diet is very low on calories which might mean that this diet will fail after a certain period of time. A persona staying on this diet will initially experience all the symptoms of starvation, followed by a significant degradation of mental focus, decrease in muscle function and loss of muscle weight. Eventually the need for survival will overtake and the appetite will increase. Such a sequence of events is essentially unavoidable and hospitalization will be the most likely result.
It’s not hard to find out for yourself that points made above are valid. A simple Google search results in multiple results along these lines:
“I have lost 27 lbs quick on Kimkins, but I also almost lost my mind. I could literally feel my boddy getting sick. I felt miserable and my calories were not nearly as low as some.”
